The problem with the "altered physics" excuse for medieval stasis

This is for, what the discord lovingly calls, 'top hat beaver' content and ideas. Mechanics that will be used to flesh out the game over the absolute necessary mechanics of the core concepts. Eventually, as the development of the SOTE project continues, things in this forum may move to the 'Core Concepts' forums as things are completed and what were once future ideas become pressing and more important to develop

The problem with the "altered physics" excuse for medieval stasis

Something I noticed in many fantasy works is that fantasy authors, often in an attempt to prevent technological progress beyond the medieval level, declare that the laws of physics are different in their world so that certain substances, such as gunpowder and coal don't work properly. However, this is quite ignorant of the fact that the laws of physics affect almost every substance and phenomenon. For example, a world where the laws of physics are different enough that gunpowder does not function would also not allow life as we know it to function, as aerobic life is powered by combustion. I'm just pointing out a common handwave used by fantasy authors that does not hold up, and that the team should avoid doing.
