Something I noticed in many fantasy works is that fantasy authors, often in an attempt to prevent technological progress beyond the medieval level, declare that the laws of physics are different in their world so that certain substances, such as gunpowder and coal don't work properly. However, this ...

Re: World Generation

Hmm. Causing variations in world size would introduce a new headache: different gravitational constants for the planet, which would affect biology and technology. Unless, of course, we handwave it by saying that the density of the core varies instead of the gravity.

Re: The Direction of the Game: True Simulation or Weighted Sandbox

I am in support of a true simulation but I am wondering how large the scale of factors will be allowed to influence the planet, the races, and the resulting society, technology, and physics, and more. Will you be going to take into account if the solar system the planet is in has multiple suns, pla...

Re: Layers of simulation, and in what order to make things

I think you've nailed it. However, I think that we'll have to include at least a temporary implementation of all of these subsystems by the release of version 1.0, and greatly expand upon the latter later.

Re: The Direction of the Game: True Simulation or Weighted Sandbox

According to True Simulationism, those "racial" traits should be a result of cultural evolution instead of being hardcoded. Remember, the full game will start in the neolithic when there isn't any reason for the elves to all be forest-dwellers, because their culture hasn't evolved yet.

Or, if they are stuck in a large plain without easily defensible structures, they could do what Russia did and blob massively to protect their core.

Re: Civilized Tiles, Wilderness Tiles, and the Nature of "Edge Ecology"

Honestly I feel like the "wildness" of an intelligent creature should be determined by culture instead of being innate. For example, elves might decide to live as forest-dwellers because their primary deity reveres the natural landscape, not because of a biological drive to.

Re: The Direction of the Game: True Simulation or Weighted Sandbox

True, David makes good points. As I said, the third example is perfectly acceptable by itself.
